Turning innovation into impact requires more than technical excellence, it depends on efficient, scalable logistics and production systems. Within the Wind4Shipping (W4S) project, logistics optimisation is a key enabler for the successful deployment of WASP systems.
W4S supports the development of WASP technologies by contributing expertise in maritime engineering, logistics and production optimisation, addressing barriers that often limit the upscaling of promising innovations. Many technical solutions fail not because of design constraints, but due to inefficiencies in production processes, logistics chains or value-chain coordination.
A pivotal role in this work is played by Hochschule Emden/Leer. Through its Faculty of Maritime Sciences, Institute for Logistics and Faculty for Business Studies, the university brings extensive expertise in maritime logistics, production optimisation and value-chain management to W4S. Based on expert workshops and applied research, seven generic logistical scenarios for WASP systems were identified and developed.
These scenarios capture a wide range of realistic logistics concepts, including fully assembled versus partially assembled transport solutions, different modes of transport and varying logistics chains from production to installation. To ensure clarity and usability, the scenarios were structured and documented as flowcharts, including executable visualisation files, completed in December 2025.
Based on expert workshops and applied research, logistical scenarios for WASP systems were identified and developed.
In parallel, a logistics simulation model is being developed using a continuous and iterative approach. This allows the gradual integration of parameters and feedback, ensuring that the model remains adaptable and can be refined as new data and insights emerge during the project.
Sites visits and online workshops grants efficient collaboration through W4S
The analytical work is closely linked to practice through the active involvement of FARWIND and Econowind, who, as wind propulsion system suppliers, are responsible for the design, manufacturing and installation of sail systems.
Online meetings with FARWIND provided direct exchanges with production teams, generating practical insights into logistics challenges and supporting the refinement of optimal logistics solutions for WASP deployment.
