Wind4Shipping Midterm Conference – Program
Wind4Shipping Midterm Conference
Wednesday, 25 November 2026 | Poort | Atrium, Sneek
Deep-dive sessions – Wind Stage
- 13:00–13:40
| Smart Specialization Strategies:
From regional potential to action: what is needed to scale up wind propulsion in North-West Europe? Antoine Grall (Agence Bretagne Next), Xueqing Liu (Ghent University) and partners from Province of Fryslân will share Wind4Shipping findings on regional strengths, competences, and smart specialisation. Moderated by Caroline Beckers (Ghent University), it is then your turn: help us identify and prioritize the practical conditions and actions that can bring wind propulsion to scale in coastal regions. - 13:40–14:20
| Performance Measuring:
Building confidence in wind propulsion through validated, transparent performance measurement: Explore how robust performance measurement and validation can accelerate the adoption of Wind Propulsion Technologies. This interactive session will address the expectations of shipowners, investors, regulators, and technology providers through discussions on data transparency, performance assessment methods, and independent verification. Participants will share perspectives, identify challenges, and help shape future validation frameworks and industry best practices with Adrien Aubert and Rémy Maige from Bureau Veritas. - 14:20–15:00
| Wind at Scale:
Wind-assisted propulsion systems such as rotor sails, suction wings or Flettner rotors have repeatedly proven their technical feasibility. Yet broad market adoption requires more than working technology: production capacities must shift from single unit to series manufacturing, supply chains need to be secured and logistics processes for transport, assembly at shipyards worldwide must scale accordingly. In this deep-dive session, we explore the industrial and logistical conditions required for this kind of upscaling.
Plenary session – Green Stage
- 15:30–16:25
| Wind4Shipping: Catching the Wind for Sustainable Shipping:
Within the Interreg NWE Wind4Shipping partnership, partners are collaborating on upscaling wind-assisted propulsion. Production, installation, onboard integration, regulations and the business case must all be addressed. This session therefore focuses primarily on scaling up: what does wind assistance deliver in practice, and what needs to happen before such systems appear on many more existing and new vessels — in a rapidly changing, competitive geopolitical world? A dedicated expert panel will reveal the latest developments, challenges and how to manage them
